Avoid a Terrible Commute Before You Move

Several years ago, a co-worker of mine from Texas moved into to a bedroom community outside the Washington DC beltway. Although he lived less than twenty miles from the office, his commute lasted anywhere from 40 minutes to over an hour. “I had no idea that DC beltway traffic was this bad,” he told me. “I should try to move closer to work, or at least get a place that’s over the bridge… “

My friend explained that where he’s from, people are quite accustomed to driving much longer distances. A 50-60 mile trek to the next town over isn’t a big deal. But in highly congested urban areas such as DC, it takes three or four times as long to go the same distance during peak rush hour (or even weekends). Though he had always heard that our Nation’s beltway was commuter hell, he couldn’t imagine it was anything like this until he got here. His regret: failing to do due diligence on the traffic situation before moving out and settling in.
